The Wine
Rivalry between Bordeaux and Bergerac stretches back centuries to when the Bordelais imposed unfair taxes in return for access to their Atlantic port. So Bordeaux gained fame, while its neighbour suffered in its shadow. Today wines like Grand Gaillard are still less well known, but offer impressive quality and value. In fact, Andrew Jefford goes even further, writing: “Bergerac’s greatest wines consistently outshine their Bordeaux competitors at twice the price.” Grand Gaillard comes from a cellar in Sigoulès and was made in a supple, fruity style without oak. As winemaker Lionel Condeau says, it’s made to be drunk ‘à la bonne franquette’ (without fuss) with family favourites such as shepherd’s pie, a hearty casserole or grilled lamb chops.
